What is breast lift surgery (mastopexy)?

#

Breast lift surgery, clinically termed mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that elevates, reshapes, and tightens sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple-areolar complex to a youthful height on the chest wall.

Clinical Pathology & Literature Context

Over time, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and significant weight fluctuations stretch the Cooper’s ligaments and skin envelope, causing the breast tissue and nipple to descend below the inframammary fold. Mastopexy reorganizes the internal glandular tissue into a conical shape and redrapes the skin envelope without necessarily altering intrinsic breast volume.

Surgical & Post-Operative Recovery Protocol

The surgery takes 2 to 3 hours under general anesthesia, restoring an uplifted, perkier, and youthful breast contour with natural projection.

Does a breast lift change my breast size?

#

A standard breast lift reshapes and elevates existing tissue but does not significantly increase or decrease overall breast size.

Clinical Pathology & Literature Context

Because redundant, stretched skin is excised and the breast parenchyma is gathered tightly together, the breasts often appear visually rounder, fuller, and firmer in clothing, frequently fitting more snugly into bra cups. However, if a patient desires substantial volume increase, a breast lift can be combined with implants (augmentation-mastopexy). Conversely, if the breasts are heavy and painful, excess tissue can be removed simultaneously (breast reduction).

Surgical & Post-Operative Recovery Protocol

Preoperative evaluation helps determine whether an isolated lift or combination procedure best meets your goals.
