What type of anesthesia is used, and is buccal fat removal painful?

#

Buccal fat removal is most commonly performed comfortably under local infiltration anesthesia, occasionally supplemented with light oral or IV conscious sedation for anxious patients.

Clinical Pathology & Literature Context

Local anesthetic containing lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into the buccal submucosa, completely numbing the inner cheek and constricting microvessels to eliminate bleeding. Patients feel gentle pressure or tugging during the dissection, but no sharp pain. Postoperative discomfort is mild, typically described as a dull ache resembling minor dental filling work.

Surgical & Post-Operative Recovery Protocol

Mild soreness is easily controlled with simple oral paracetamol or mild analgesics for 48 to 72 hours.
