Specific Risks: Contour Irregularities and Fluid Accumulation

The most common complications of liposuction are typically localised and related to the final aesthetic contour and immediate healing process.

• Contour Deformities: This represents the most frequent complication. The skin in the treated area may appear bumpy, wavy, or withered. This can be caused by uneven fat removal or by poor skin elasticity. These changes, unfortunately, may be permanent.

• Fluid Accumulation (Seroma): After surgery, temporary pockets of clear fluid, called seromas, can sometimes form under the skin. These are not dangerous but may need to be drained with a small needle in my office to help the area heal flat.

Temporary Side Effects (Expected Part of Recovery)

• Numbness: Temporary numbness or altered sensation (paresthesias) in the treated areas is possible. This is due to minor nerve irritation and should resolve on its own in 6 to 8 weeks.

Severe (But Rare) Complications

Severe complications are rare but are critical to understand. They require immediate medical intervention, and my entire surgical team is trained to prevent and, if necessary, manage them.

• Thromboembolism (DVT/PE): Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. This is a serious complication because the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism (PE).

• Fat Embolism: In very rare cases, pieces of loosened fat can break away and enter the bloodstream, blocking blood flow to the lungs or brain. This is a medical emergency.

• Internal Puncture: Though extremely rare with modern techniques, the cannula (the thin tube used) could penetrate too deeply and puncture an internal organ. This would require emergency surgical repair.

• Lidocaine Toxicity: The tumescent “wetting solution” used in liposuction contains the local anesthetic lidocaine. If the safe dosage limits are exceeded, it can cause serious heart and central nervous system problems.

• Fluid Shifts: When performing large-volume liposuction, the large shifts in the body’s fluid levels can potentially cause kidney or heart problems.
